No matter how long you've been playing music, or what style of music you play, the fundamentals remain the same.
Beat and rhythm underpin everything we do.
The following videos are designed to help you develop your rhythmic skills.
Clap Jam
What to do: Copy the rhythm in the space.
Level: beginners to experts
Extension :For those of you with a bit more experience, try to notate each rhythm
Bim Bum
What to do: The first couple of rounds, just echo the birds (I know. Trust me) Then, you have to remember the whole pattern. Honestly, the birds tell you what to do.
Level: beginners to intermediate
Extension: create your own body percussion echo rhythm
Which Rhythm?
What to do: The penguins are going to show you three rhythms. They are also going to speak to you in Spanish. Qué? No hablo español? That's ok. You don't need to speak Spanish. They will play one of the rhythms twice. Then you have to figure out which rhythm it is.
Level: beginner
Extension: Learn Spanish.
The Nutcracker - Rhythm Practice
What to do: It's karaoke rhythm practice. Follow the little jumping dude and clap the rhythm.
Level: beginners to intermediate (although, let's be honest, I've done this about a billion times and still love it!)
Extension: Find a recording of a piece of music you love and write out the rhythms.
10 Golden Exercises to Learn to Read Rhythms
What to do: I've gotta admit, this one is a little dry (read: no Spanish-speaking penguins), but it is really useful for practicing rhythms without having to worry about reading pitches at the same time. The metronome counts you in at the beginning and you clap the whole page.
Level: intermediate to advanced (it does get quite tricky towards the end)
Extension: this video
